Things to organise before starting your website design

Designing a new website, whether you’re going down the DIY route or outsourcing the design means you need to begin collecting inspiration and content so that the overall design meets your goals and objectives and most importantly serves your audience.

Research

Just like any project, before you get too excited and overwhelmed, you need to do some strategic research.

This looks like competitor research and some inspirational research on platforms such as Pinterest.

Ask yourself, what is my target audience looking for, what’s trending in your industry and what will make your design stand out.

Branding

Having your branding nailed will make this process SO MUCH EASIER. It will shape the basisof the design from colours and fonts through to look and feel.

Content Planning

Determine the types of content you want to include on your website, such as text, images, videos, and downloadable resources. Outline the structure and organisation of your content, including the main pages, subpages, and any specific functionality or interactive elements required.

Create a Sitemap

Develop a sitemap that outlines the structure and hierarchy of your website. A sitemap visually represents the different pages and how they are interconnected and helps you plan the navigation, understand the flow of information, and ensure a positive, logical and intuitive user experience.

Gather Visual Assets & Write Your Copy

Collect the visual assets such as images and videos you'll need for your website design, along with your logo, brand colors, typography, images, and graphics. Ensure you have high-quality versions of these assets to maintain a consistent and professional visual identity.

Ensure that file sizes are optimised so that they don’t slow down your site speed once published.

If you’re not a wordsmith and you’re anxious about writing then we highly suggest you engage with a copywriter. Best investment ever!

Select a Design Team or Platform

Decide whether you'll hire a professional design team (maybe that’s us?!), or select a website builder platform. Choosing the right platform for you is a big decision to make as getting it wrong can be costly.

Now is also the time to engage with an SEO specialist as getting your SEO right from the beginning will ultimately save you money and get your website seen by your target audience far quicker.
